Born and raised in Cuba for the first part of her life, Maria-Elena emigrated to the United States with her family in 1969.  Being only ten years old at the time, she has received the majority of her education in this country, including an Associate Degree from Rio Hondo College in Whitter, California, and as a result is fluent in both English and Spanish.  She has been married for over twenty-four years and has a son and a daughter.
